Most UK loft insulation projects fall somewhere between a few hundred pounds for a simple top-up and several thousand where old material has to be removed and boarding installed. The price depends far more on loft area and scope of work than on the insulation itself.

Our published rates
We publish per-square-metre rates rather than quoting a vague ballpark. Standard insulation removal is £10/m², vermiculite or granulated removal £15/m², mineral wool installation runs from £10/m² at 100mm to £30/m² at 300mm, and raised loft boarding is £55/m². Loft ladders and hatches are fixed-price items.
That means a 40m² loft having old insulation removed and 300mm installed works out at roughly £1,600 before any boarding, and you can check the arithmetic yourself.
Grants and free insulation schemes
Government-backed schemes exist for some households, usually tied to benefits or property EPC rating. They are worth checking, but be cautious: scheme installations are often 100mm laid quickly with no removal, no boarding and no ventilation work. If a free installation leaves you with compressed or poorly ventilated insulation, it can cost more to correct later.
Why the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest job
Low quotes usually exclude removal, waste disposal, ventilation, hatch draught-proofing, or they install a shallower depth than quoted. Ask for the depth in millimetres, the area in square metres and what happens to the old material.
Common questions
How much does it cost to insulate a loft in the UK?
Costs scale with loft area. Working to LoftFix rates, installing 300mm of mineral wool is £30/m², so a typical 40m² loft is around £1,200, with removal of old insulation adding roughly £10–£15/m².
Is loft insulation worth the cost?
For most homes with under 150mm of existing insulation, topping up to current standards is one of the lower-cost energy improvements available and usually shows in comfort as well as bills.
