Should You Remove Old Loft Insulation?

Not All Old Insulation Needs Removing

One of the most common questions we receive is whether existing loft insulation should be removed before new insulation is installed. The answer depends entirely on the condition, type, and depth of the existing material. In many cases, old insulation that is clean, dry, and in reasonable condition can simply be topped up to the current recommended depth.

When Removal Is Recommended

Removal is typically recommended when:

The insulation is damp, water-damaged, or shows signs of mould
It has been contaminated by pest activity (rodents, birds, insects)
It is the wrong type for the application (e.g., spray foam where conventional insulation is more appropriate)
It has degraded, compacted, or settled to the point where it is no longer effective
It is blocking ventilation pathways or covering structural elements that need inspection

When a Top-Up Is Sufficient

A top-up may be appropriate when:

The existing insulation is clean, dry, and structurally intact
It simply needs additional depth to reach the current standard
The existing material is compatible with the top-up material being used
There are no underlying issues with damp, pests, or ventilation

How We Assess

Most projects are assessed remotely using satellite imagery and the information you provide about your loft. Based on this, we can usually determine the right approach. In the small number of cases where a site visit is needed before quoting, we will let you know. Any ventilation or condensation considerations are then evaluated and addressed on the day of installation at no extra cost.

What About Blown-In Insulation?

Blown-in or loose-fill insulation presents particular challenges. Over time, it tends to settle and compact, leaving areas of the loft with minimal effective coverage. It can also be difficult to add conventional mineral wool on top of loose-fill material, as it does not provide a stable base. In many cases, removal and replacement with a full mineral wool installation is the most effective approach.

Cost Considerations

Removal adds to the overall project cost, and it should only be recommended when it is genuinely necessary. A reputable installer will not recommend removal simply to increase the scope of work. If your existing insulation is in good condition and just needs topping up, that is what we will recommend.
