Why Cheap Loft Insulation Quotes Go Wrong

The shortcuts behind unusually low quotes, and what putting them right costs.

A cheaper quote is not automatically a worse one. But when a price is far below everything else, the difference is usually explained by work that has been left out rather than efficiency.

    Where the money is saved

    • Shallower depth than specified — 150mm laid where 300mm was quoted
    • Old insulation left in place beneath new material when it should have been removed
    • Waste left in the loft, in the garden, or fly-tipped
    • Insulation pushed hard into the eaves, blocking ventilation
    • Boards laid straight onto joists, crushing the insulation underneath
    • Hatch, tanks and pipework ignored

    What it costs to correct

Putting right a compressed, poorly ventilated loft usually means stripping out and starting again — removal at £10/m² plus reinstallation, rather than the single job you paid for once already. Condensation damage to timbers costs considerably more.

    Comparing fairly

Ask each quote for area, depth, removal, disposal and ventilation in writing. Once those are on paper, price differences become explainable rather than mysterious.

    Common questions

Why are some loft insulation quotes so cheap?

Usually because removal, disposal, ventilation work or the full specified depth have been excluded. Ask for area, depth and inclusions in writing to compare quotes fairly.

If you would like an honest opinion on your own loft, send us your postcode and a few photographs. Most lofts can be assessed and quoted remotely using satellite imagery, and we will tell you if work is not necessary.
